Saphardic Culture

palmtree

Our Sephardic tradition is truly a treasure beyond compare. Our ancient customs, songs, literature, and family life make us distinct and worthy of praise. Sephardic culture originates in Spain during the Golden Era when luminaries such as the Maimonidies and the Ramban refined and codified the ancient Jewish customs. Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, also known as Maimonidies, codified Jewish law and custom in his book, Mishneh Torah. This holy book was sent to all the Jewish communities in the Middle East. The Jewish communities in Spain, Persia, Yemen, and many others used the Mishna Torah as a lifeline to preserve their tradition. Sephardic Jews regardless of their countries of original identify with each other in large part because of the unifying nature of Maimonidies efforts.
Today, some eight hundred years later, Sephardic Jews still hold strong to the tradition that was past down from ancient times. Many Jews have left their countries of origin such as Turkey, Iran, Yemen, and others to make aliyah to Israel. Many have traveled to the United States of America, where religious freedom is the law of the land. America is truly a place where Sephardic culture can flourish. Unfortunately, many are using the freedoms afforded them to forsake the ancient tradition. In Los Angeles there is a great and noble struggle to make sure that future generations will preserve the beautiful customs that have sustained us for so long. S.T.A.R. is playing a part in this worthy cause.
